United Kingdom

Throughout the Middle Ages, Scotland fought to remain independent from England. One of the most famous conflicts was the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 1200s and early 1300s. During this time, leaders such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce became important figures in the struggle for Scottish independence. Their efforts helped Scotland remain a separate kingdom for several centuries.

In 1603, a major political change occurred when James VI and I, the king of Scotland, also became the king of England, bringing the two kingdoms under the same monarch. Later, in 1707, the Acts of Union 1707 formally united Scotland and England into the Kingdom of Great Britain. Although the countries shared a government, Scotland kept some of its own legal and educational systems.

In the centuries that followed, Scotland contributed greatly to science, industry, and culture, especially during the Scottish Enlightenment, when thinkers such as Adam Smith and David Hume influenced philosophy, economics, and political ideas. Scottish cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh grew as centers of education, trade, and industry.

Today, Scotland is one of the four nations of the United Kingdom. It has its own parliament located in Edinburgh, and it maintains a strong cultural identity known for traditions such as bagpipe music, Highland landscapes, and historic castles.
